The Orlando Pirates adidas global home kit campaign confirms that South Africa’s most storied club now stands alongside football’s most recognised names worldwide.

adidas launched its 2026/27 global home kit campaign in August 2026. The Buccaneers feature as one of 19 priority clubs selected by the brand. They are the only African side on that list.

The full roster reads like a who’s who of world football. Real Madrid, Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Juventus, Manchester United and Inter Miami all feature. Pirates sit among them — not as guests, but as equals.

Why This Selection Matters

A roster of 19 clubs sounds large. In reality, adidas partners with hundreds of clubs globally. Being elevated to priority status is a deliberate commercial and editorial choice. It shapes which clubs appear in flagship seasonal content, global advertising and brand storytelling.

Thalente Mbatha, the Bafana Bafana midfielder, represents Pirates in the campaign imagery. He appears in black and gold next to Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice. That image alone tells a story about where South African football now sits in the global conversation.

Mbatha is currently managing a knee injury. Yet his face anchors Pirates’ place in one of adidas’ most visible annual launches. For supporters, that visibility carries real emotional weight.

Gold Kits and a Golden Anniversary

On 30 July 2026, Orlando Pirates and adidas unveiled the 2026/27 home and away kits. Both designs draw on Johannesburg’s identity as the City of Gold. Bold gold detailing runs across the classic black base. The range extends beyond match shirts into pre-match and lifestyle pieces.

The timing sharpens the campaign’s significance. Pirates are reigning Betway Premiership champions. The club’s 90th anniversary arrives in 2027. adidas has chosen this exact moment to amplify the Buccaneers’ global profile. That is not coincidence — it is strategy.

As one analyst put it: “adidas does not add clubs to its priority list by accident — Pirates’ selection reflects sustained sporting achievement, commercial growth and a fanbase that travels well beyond Soweto’s borders.”

What Does This Mean For South African Football?

South African club football rarely receives this level of international platform. However, this campaign changes that calculus. When fans in Europe, Asia or the Americas scroll adidas’ seasonal content, Pirates appear in the same frame as the sport’s biggest brands.

That exposure builds commercial leverage. Kit sales, licensing revenues and sponsor interest all respond to global visibility. Meanwhile, younger supporters across Africa now see a local club positioned at the centre of world football culture — not on the margins of it.

In addition, the selection signals that African clubs can compete for top-tier brand partnerships on merit. Pirates have earned this through trophies, packed stadiums and a fanbase that generates genuine commercial returns.

As the 90-year milestone approaches, executives and investors tracking the commercialisation of African football should watch whether this campaign translates into measurable revenue growth for the club and accelerates interest from regional sponsors seeking association with a globally positioned African brand.
