The Noah Anyadike EFL Cup debut on 25 August 2026 rewrote the record books and stunned the football world.

Cardiff City versus Norwich City felt like a routine EFL Cup tie. Instead, it delivered history. Cardiff fell 2–1 at home, but the result was almost beside the point.

Record night for a schoolboy defender

Anyadike started at centre-back for Cardiff at just 15 years and 98 days. As a result, he became the youngest player in EFL Cup history, beating Harvey Elliott’s 2018 mark. He also became the youngest player in Cardiff City history, topping records recently set by Rob Tankiewicz and Axel Donczew.

Norwich still spoiled the party. Mathias Kvistgaarden struck on 25 minutes and Ante Crnac added a second on 78. Cardiff’s late push brought a stoppage-time goal from Yousef Salech, but the Championship side still fell 2–1. However, the result felt secondary to the landmark that had just been made.

From school holidays to senior football

Anyadike’s rise has been lightning fast. Cardiff are battling an injury crisis at centre-back, with senior options sidelined. Therefore, manager Brian Barry-Murphy turned to the Carmarthenshire-born Wales youth international, still juggling school with football.

Barry-Murphy admitted the club had been lucky because Anyadike spent school holidays training full-time with the squad. He praised the teenager’s physical presence and mentality, noting the youngster is very big for his age and can play at a very high level. Meanwhile, the dream debut had a painful twist — Anyadike hobbled off on 53 minutes with muscle cramp, his historic night cut short.

Cardiff’s new generation and Nigerian roots

Anyadike is the third player in under a year to reset Cardiff’s youngest-player record, showing a clear pathway for youth. Tankiewicz set the mark at 16 years and 117 days, then Donczew at 15 years and 234 days. By contrast, Anyadike smashed straight through both markers.

With Nigerian heritage and Welsh youth caps, he represents a modern, dual-identity talent. For African fans, this feels familiar: a powerful defender, schooled in Britain, carrying family roots from West Africa. In addition, Cardiff know they must handle that potential wisely.

Barry-Murphy, formerly in Manchester City‘s academy, stressed the balance. Cardiff must protect him, educate him and still push him, giving him the level of challenge he needs to become a key player for club and country. Source: BBC Sport.

What’s next for Anyadike?

Anyadike could feature again quickly. Cardiff host Sheffield United in the Championship on Saturday, and he is already in first-team contention. However, his minutes will be managed carefully after that cramp.

Born in 2011, still in school, and already the youngest player in EFL Cup history — the story is only just beginning. African and Welsh fans will track every step from here.
