How African stars built Napoli’s Scudetto glory

The Napoli African legacy stands as one of the most compelling stories in modern Serie A history.

It did not arrive overnight. Decade by decade, player by player, African footballers reshaped what Napoli means to the world. The result is a club whose identity is now inseparable from the continent that fuelled its greatest triumphs.

From Saber to Koulibaly: the roots run deep

Moroccan defender Abdelilah Saber was among the first African players to represent Napoli in the modern era, making appearances for the club in the 2000–01, 2001–02 and 2002–03 seasons. Few noted the significance at the time. In hindsight, it was the quiet start of something larger.

The signal grew louder when Kalidou Koulibaly arrived in 2014. The Senegalese centre-back spent eight years at the club. He became one of Europe’s finest defenders and, for African fans, a symbol of belonging. As a result, Naples stopped feeling like a transit point. It felt like home.

Those foundations mattered. They made Victor Osimhen’s arrival feel like continuation, not coincidence. Meanwhile, the groundwork Koulibaly laid shaped the culture Osimhen and others would inherit.

Osimhen and Anguissa: architects of the 2022–23 Scudetto

The 2022–23 season delivered Napoli’s third Serie A title — their first top‑flight Scudetto in 33 years since the 1989–90 triumph. Victor Osimhen scored 26 Serie A goals in 2022–23 and finished as Capocannoniere, the league’s top scorer. His performances were decisive from the opening weeks.

The title was confirmed on 4 May 2023 with a 1–1 draw away to Udinese, when Sandi Lovric scored in the 13th minute and Victor Osimhen equalised in the 52nd minute. That point ended the arithmetic. Napoli were champions.

What does Lukaku’s arrival mean for Napoli’s African identity?

Romelu Lukaku, a Belgian striker of Congolese heritage, joined Napoli permanently in August 2024 and brought physicality and experience to the club’s attack. His consistency gave managers a reliable foundation to build around.

Napoli’s fourth Serie A title followed in the 2024–25 season, with Lukaku scoring in a decisive 2–0 win over Cagliari that secured the championship.

A generation watching from Lagos, Douala and Dakar

Young strikers in Lagos, midfielders in Douala and defenders in Dakar now see Naples differently. They watch players who look like them lift trophies and define eras. However, the inspiration stretches beyond football. It is about representation at the highest level of European competition.

The next generation will chase that path.

Quick answers
Who were the key African players in Napoli’s 2022–23 Serie A title win?

Victor Osimhen and André-Frank Zambo Anguissa were the standout African contributors. Osimhen scored 26 league goals and won the Capocannoniere award, while Anguissa controlled midfield throughout the campaign.

When did Napoli clinch the 2022–23 Scudetto?

Napoli secured the title on 4 May 2023 with a 1–1 draw away to Udinese, their first Serie A championship in 33 years since 1989–90.

Which African player first represented Napoli in the modern era?

Moroccan defender Abdelilah Saber appeared for Napoli across the 2000–01, 2001–02 and 2002–03 seasons, making him one of the earliest African players to represent the club.
