Ayyoub Bouaddi Man City transfer makes history at 18

The Ayyoub Bouaddi Man City transfer has sent shockwaves through European football, confirming the 18-year-old Morocco midfielder as the Premier League’s most expensive teenager in history.
Moroccan Teen Lands Landmark Etihad Move

Manchester City have agreed an £85.6m deal with Lille for the Moroccan midfielder. At just 18, Bouaddi arrives on a five-year contract. He steps into a midfield reshaped after Rodri’s departure to Barcelona.

For African fans, this moment carries real weight. Bouaddi moves from Lille prodigy to the heart of Enzo Maresca’s new project. He carries the hopes of Morocco and North Africa into the Premier League spotlight.

The story behind the move is just as compelling. Bouaddi debuted for Lille in 2023. At 16, he became their youngest-ever senior player in a Europa League tie against KI.

From Lille Record-Breaker to World Cup Star

Bouaddi went on to rack up 96 appearances for Lille. He helped them finish third in Ligue 1 last season. However, the real explosion came in Europe and on the global stage.

He starred in Lille’s famous 2024 Champions League victory over Real Madrid. That display announced him to the continent with a commanding midfield performance. He then carried that form into the 2026 World Cup.

In that tournament, Bouaddi started five of Morocco’s six matches. Their run extended all the way to the quarter-finals. He has since earned eight caps for his country.

City’s New Engine Room After Rodri

Meanwhile, Manchester City’s midfield has been torn up and rebuilt from scratch. Ballon d’Or winner Rodri has departed for Barcelona, while Tijjani Reijnders and Nico Gonzalez are also heading for the exit. Bouaddi arrives alongside club-record signing Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest, who cost £116m.

Anderson brings box-to-box energy and versatility to City’s new setup. By contrast, Bouaddi operates as a deep-lying conductor, dictating tempo and building attacks from the base of midfield. As a result, his passing range should complement Anderson’s driving runs and physical presence.

City are still chasing Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea. Therefore, Bouaddi represents only the first big piece of Maresca’s new puzzle. The project is far from complete.

What This Means for African Football Fans

By contrast with previous African exports, Bouaddi’s fee and status signal deep trust in African youth development. An 18-year-old North African midfielder has become the most expensive teenager in Premier League history. That landmark resonates far beyond Manchester.

For kids watching in Casablanca, Rabat, Lagos, Accra and Nairobi, this move is pure fuel. Bouaddi built his career through Lille’s academy, continental competitions and the World Cup. His path shows that African talent, nurtured smartly, can drive the biggest projects in European football.

In addition, the real test now begins. Can Bouaddi handle replacing Rodri in the Premier League furnace? If he does, City’s new No.6 will become the latest African midfield leader at the very top of the game.
